HCE (Home and Community Education)
(Formerly the Homemakers)

Knights of Columbus, Spooner Council #5397

Lions Club

While the basic purpose of the organization is to aid the blind and visually handicapped, the individual clubs also strive to meet other civic needs. Motto is "We Serve."

    Parents, teachers, and community members in the School District of Northwood and beyond who work together to identify and create more opportunities for parents and community members to contribute their time, talent, and viewpoints for the benefit of the school and students.     Spooner Kiwanis

    Part of an international organization with a major emphasis on making a difference in young people's lives. Committed to eliminating the world's leading cause of preventable mental retardation, iodine deficiency disorder. Bob Olson, 635-8519.


    Spooner PTA (Parent-Teacher Association)

    Supports students and speaks on their behalf in the community and before governmental bodies and other organizations that make decisions affecting children; assists parents in developing skills needed to raise and protect children; encourages parental and public involvement in public schools.     Spooner Study Club

    Works for the intellectual, social, and cultural betterment of the club's members and community. Enhancement of the library continues to be a major focus of the group. Dawn Kaltenbach, 635-3112.

    Birchwood Garden Club Exchanges information about gardening and houseplants. Virginia Haag, 236-7361.


    Bobcat Sledders ATV Club

    Promotes safe and enjoyable riding and seeks to develop more ATV trails. Lee Minnick, 354-3023.


    Bobcat Sledders Snowmobile Club

    Promotes and enjoys snowmobiling. Ed Rurup, 354-7993.


    HON (Heart of the North) Saddle Club

    Encourages participation in equine activities; sponsors horse show and trail rides. Mary Housel, 635-7375.


    Minong/Wascott Area Trail Club

    Promotes trail riding and trail development. Includes members who snowmobile and ride ATVs. Lester "Skip" Fiedler, 466-4732.


    Rolling Hills Snowmobile and ATV Club

    Promotes snowmobile trail riding and maintains the snowmobile trails in Washburn County. Jim Dienstl, 635-8661.


    Spooner Garden Club

    Stimulates the knowledge and love of gardening, and encourages civic planting and beautification of home yards. Georganne Behn 466-5680.


    Stone Lake Area Garden Club

    Exchanges knowledge of plants; trades plants. Phyllis Denison, 865-2161.


    Studebaker Driver's Club - Badger Wheel Chapter

    Exchanges information about collectible and antique cars. Sponsors Spooner Car Show and Swap Meet in June. Cecil Scribner, 635-3740.


    Wild River Quilters

    Explores the art of quilting and shares information about quilting. Vonnie Durand, 635-3510.


    CHILDREN & TEENS

    4-H Program

    The 4-H program offers young people from kindergarten through one year beyond high school the opportunity to learn together through projects, events, and activities with guidance from volunteer adult leaders.

    Members chose and plan their projects, which range from horses to health, cats to clothing, leadership to looking good.

    The youths also develop qualities that enable them to become capable and responsible leaders. In addition, the 11 4-H community clubs in Washburn County provide valuable services to their communities.

    Boy Scouts

    The mission of the Boy Scouts is to prepare young people to make ethical choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Law.

    Washburn County is home to Pack and Troop 51 of Shell Lake, Pack 62 and Troop 104 of Spooner, and Pack and Troop 66 of Birchwood.

    Cub Scouts is for boys in first through fourth grades, while Boy Scouts is for boys in fifth grade through the age of 18. The Venture program and the Learning for Life/Exploring, a career-based program, is for young men and women aged 14 to 21.

    Scouts learn to honor home, school, and church or synagogue through such activities as community service, camping, swimming, sailing, social events, and skill-building activities that create teamwork, self-reliance, and confidence.

    Girl Scouts

    The goal of Girl Scouts is to inspire girls with the highest ideals of character, conduct, patriotism, and service so they can become happy and resourceful citizens.

    Activities range from camping and swimming to seeing plays, doing science experiments, making crafts, and doing community service projects.

    Girls in kindergarten belong to Daisies, first- through third-graders are part of Brownies, fourth- through sixth-graders are Juniors, seventh- through ninth-graders are Cadets, and 10th- through 12th-graders are Seniors.

    In Washburn County, from two to several troops have formed at each level. For information call Marty Janey, 635-4503.


    CULTURAL ARTS

    Indianhead Writers Club

    Exchanges information on various types of writing. Sponsors workshops and publishes books compiled from members' writing. Mary Olson, 635-2931.


    Intermezzo Music Club

    Promotes music and encourages community youth in their musical endeavors by providing scholarships and awards. Presents an annual Advent Concert in December. Janet Medley, 635-3240.


    RAV'N (Rural Arts Voice North)

    Promotes artists in North-western Wisconsin. Hosts annual art show, and sponsors display of art and collections in showcase at North Woods Community Health Center in Minong. Rosemarie Lang, 466-2561.


    Spooner Area Community Choir

    Community choir with members from throughout several counties that performs a variety of music, from classical to pop. Elaine D Walker, 635-7573.


    Theatre in the Woods

    Community theatre group run entirely by volunteers. TitW typically produces four major productions between September and May and a children's show during the summer. Also participates in community events. Some productions are staged with financial assistance from grants. Erika Quam Memorial Theater, Shell Lake. 468-4387.


    Northern Star Theatre

    Non-profit organization dedicated to promoting quality theatre and performing arts with a special emphasis on supporting youth and children. 1/877/379-7529.
