STREAMS & LAKES OF THE COUNTY
- Named lakes: 257, with 26,193 water surface acres and 563 miles of shoreline.
- Unnamed lakes and ponds: 659, with 4,007 surface water acres and 299 miles of shoreline.
- Wetlands: More than 13 percent of the county's area.
- Fifty-two lakes and unnamed bodies of water; each encompasses more than 100 acres. Twenty-one are over 200 acres and
offer suitable surface for fast boaters. Most heavily used lakes are Long, Shell, Nancy, and Gilmore, plus the Minong
Flowage.
- Lake depths: From 1 foot to more than 70 feet (Nick Lake, 79 feet; Middle Kimball Lake, 77 feet; Big Devil and Red
lakes, 75 feet; Long Lake, 74 feet).
- Largest lake: Long Lake, 3,290 acres, 11 percent of all lake surface in county.
- Second largest lake: Shell Lake, 2,580 acres, the largest landlocked lake in Wisconsin.
- Streams: 56 named streams, including nearly half of the 98-mile-long Namekagon River, the 41-mile-long Totagatic River,
and 16-mile-long Yellow River; five tributaries; in total, 331 miles of streams and 1,560 surface water acres, including
97 miles of trout streams.
